While there has been much scepticism about the potential for OLED screens, Sony have announced that their recently released 11 inch OLED screen (previously only available in Japan) will go on sale in the US immediately. This is excellent news for the sector, but the added bonus was the 27 inch OLED set which Sony wheeled out to show the public!
There has been much negative press about the possibilities of the OLED technology with many suggesting that it was impossible to produce the screens to a size that would appeal to the mass market. While the screens are only 3mm thick, it was the size of the display which was the problem, but the release of a 27 inch prototype seems to blown those worries out of the water. So what next for the OLED sector?
Sony firmly believe that OLED is where the display market will be heading in the near future and they have committed themselves to massive investment in this area (although the figures have not been confirmed). These user friendly and environmentally friendly screens have astounded those who have had the benefit of seeing them first hand, but the new enlarged prototype should help to allay the fears of both retailers and the public with regards to their future.
OLED has had a number of false starts in the past, but the ongoing push seems to be a lot better founded. With the likes of Sony backing the technology all of the way, it seems only a matter of time before the other majors will need to follow. It will surely not be long before OLED screens are available in the UK?
