2GB DDR2 – A higher capacity RAM memory

2GB DDR2 and other type of memory modules with even higher capacity are now becoming easily available in market. The exponential growth of internet forced servers and networking elements such as routers etc. to equip with large capacity RAM. Even desktop and laptop computers also require a large capacity RAM to cater RAM requirement for running ever increasingly memory hungry applications and games in the market. DDR technology also evolved to DDR2 and DDR3 types of memories to achieve more bandwidth without actually increasing the front end bus speed of computer system.

DDR2 memory modules are capable of delivering double bandwidth which would otherwise offered by DDR memory module. It is using double pumping technique that is it allows transfer of data at both rising and falling edge of clock in a cycle and further by putting an Input / Output buffer in between memory and the data bus. These two factors effectively increase the memory bandwidth by four times in comparison with SDRAM and twice than that of DDR RAM. DDR2 memory modules however have double latency as that of DDR module because memory clock run at half the rate in DDR2 memory modules than the external data bus clock.

Therefore for achieving the same latency as that of DDR memory module, the DDR2 memory modules have to run at least twice fast. 2GB memory modules facilitates better utilization memory slots in the system and system RAM capacity can be enhanced to its supported capacity without wasting the low capacity modules in the event of its up-gradation to a higher value.
