SODIMM – Option for Space constraint system

Small Outline Dual in-line Memory Module, the SODIMMs are special memory modules built for smaller systems using integrated circuits. These memory modules are smaller alternative, half the size, of DIMM memory module package. These are developed to be used with the systems having space constraints. Such system could be laptops and application specific system like large printers, routers and other high end networking components. The SO DIMM memory modules are packaged in different pin configuration from 144 pins to 204 pins as against 168 to 240 pin configuration used in the DIMM memory module.

The different pin configured memory modules can be easily identified by the single notch on memory modules. The location of notch from the centre of module indicates the type of memory that is whether the module is of DDR or DDR2 type. The different position of notch in different type of memory module is adopted to prevent wrong installation of module as the modules of different types are not interchangeable. Power efficiency is one of the main criterions for development of miniaturized and moving systems. Less power consumption will entail lesser load on power packs with the systems on move.

These memory modules since consume less power therefore are suitable for such type of systems. SODIMM modules are available in all that is DDR, DDR2, DDR3, types. These modules are package for different capacity and different front end clock speed systems. Smaller size of such memory modules also helps in its easy accommodation in space constrained systems.
