Despite a number of repeated denials that they are planning the launch of an Xbox 3, Microsoft have been under yet more pressure over the last few days with “evidence” that are working on a new version of the Xbox. Well placed source claim that a high profile game which had been designed and coded for the current Xbox has now be mothballed and is set to be released with the so called “Xbox 3”. But can this really be true?
While there is no doubt that Microsoft have been looking to increase the amount of services available on the Xbox, the chances of them issuing a new Xbox upgrade this year seem very very slim. The original Xbox has not been out long enough to fulfil its sales potential so why attempt to cut off this income stream and introduce a new one? When you also consider that Nintendo and Sony have said they will let their latest machines run their full course before replacing them, a new Xbox would leave Microsoft open to claims of profiteering. But will a new Xbox be the legacy which Bill Gates leaves us with?
Despite rumours of some high profile announcements at the recent CES2008 show, there has been surprisingly little ground breaking news from Microsoft, at a time when many had expected Bill Gates to mark his last show as leader of Microsoft with something special. However, nobody really knows what Bill Gates is up to and he could well leave us hanging until the very last minute before announcing something special. What we do know for certain is that his HD DVD technology drive is dead in the water, so that is one which we can mark off the list!
